Vocabulary of Jihad

Some terms you might find useful to know in your own explorations of Islam:

Abu _____: An oft-used nomme de guerre by terrorists. (literally, "father of _____")
Crusader: Westerner
Dar-al-Harb: Non-Islamic lands (literally, "Land of War")
Haram: Unclean
Hudna: A tactical ceasefire, used to buy time
Jaish: Army. Often found as part of terror groups' names
Jihad: Crusade*
Lashkar: Militia. Often found as part of terror groups' names
al-Naqba: The birth of the State of Israel (literally, "the Catastrophe")
Qaffir: Infidel
Quds: Jerusalem (literally, "Holy")
Ummah: The Islamic world as a (w)hole
Yahud: Jew

* Muslims protest that "jihad" doesn't necessarily mean "holy war." They enlighten us that it can be a struggle for anything. At the same time, they consider "crusade" a dirty word.

Well, "crusade" has the same spectrum of meaning as "jihad." It can be anything from a holy war to retake Jerusalem, to a social movement. In short, "jihad" and "crusade" are perfect translations for one another.

The Bloody Borders of Islam

Muslims would have you believe that their anger at the non-Islamic world stems from Western support for Israel. If this is the case, can someone explain to me why practically every border between an Islamic polity and a non-Islamic polity is either strife-torn or a hotbed of Islamic terror?

Turkey-Greece
India-Pakistan
Malaysia-Thailand
Philippines-Indonesia/Malaysia
Chechnya-Russia

Does any of the above have anything to do with the Jews? Or can we finally just accept that Islamic bloodlust is its own, very real and terrifying phenomenon?

Dhim Crow (what is a dhimmi?)

In its benign wisdom, Islam ("Subjugation," in English) creates a social place for certain groups of non-Muslims--dhimmi--living under its tender rule. That is, it sets out very clear do's and don'ts for these groups.

Dhimmi may not, for example:

Hold government office
Offer testimony against Muslims
Inherit property from Muslims (though Muslims can inherit from dhimmi)
Have noisy funerals
Ride horses or camels
Miscegenate with Muslims

On the other hand, dhimmi may:

Pay a poll tax
Wear distinctive clothing, lest they be mistaken for Muslims

Can't marry...courtroom testimony is worthless...poll tax...sound familiar? It seems that in addition to algebra and numerals, the Islamic world also invented what Americans now (not-so-)fondly refer to as Jim Crow. With that in mind, the best translation of "dhimmi"--what the Islamic world calls you and me--is "ni**er."

Thankfully, America has done away with Jim Crow. But Dhim Crow is alive and well.
